Santa Clara & San Ildefonso Pottery: The same red clay is used for both the black and the red pottery, for which Santa Clara and San Ildefonso Pueblos are famous world-wide. It is in the firing processes that the differences in hue are created. The blackware is made by smothering the flame in the outdoor firing areas. The potteryware is characterized by a smooth combination of matte and satin finish surfaces, or by incised, sgraffito, or engraved lines. Each is a masterpiece of art and story, told through the medium of design. Painstakingly developed from a study of pottery shards uncovered at nearby archaeological sites, the pottery increases inpopularity with collectors and appreciates in value year by year.
